People may think that plastic cages are the best. Well, no they're not. Wooden cages are stronger and rats love to chew - wooden cages are thick enough for them to chew. It's easy to make a wooden cage, it just takes time. You can build a quite large one which the rats will really like.
Our rat cage has wood shavings and shredded paper. The rats will take the shredded paper and put it in their house until there is none left. They make a really cosy nest this way. We get our wood shavings from the Giant Pet Store. Rats are quite clean, but their cage needs cleaning out at least once a week. I have cleaned our rat cage out before, but my Mum almost always does it while I'm playing with the rats or sunbathing. It doesn't really take that long to do, but I don't like touching rat poo. You could put a paper shredder on top of your rat cage (like they do on the CBBC hamster cage), but we haven't done that. Here is a picture of someone else's Hamster Cage Shredder Attachment. |
